About Best Tool For Me

Best Tool For Me is a collection of free tools that answer one question: which is the right tool for what I need? It is written for everyone, not only for people who work with computers.

The idea

Everyday questions often need a small calculation: how many working days until a deadline, how many hours were worked this week, when Easter falls in a given year, how much overtime pays. The answer exists on thousands of pages, many of them cluttered, confusing or wrong for your country. We build the tool and explain the rule behind it, so that you can check the answer and trust it.

Each tool has a page with the calculator, a plain explanation of how it works, worked examples and the questions people ask most. Nothing is hidden behind a registration form, and you never have to install anything.

How we keep the results correct

  • Calculations are tested. The date, holiday, Easter, hours and overtime functions are covered by automated tests with known values, including every year from 2000 to 2100 for Easter, checked against an independent implementation.
  • Rules, not tables. Moving feasts such as Easter are computed from published algorithms, so results stay right for any year.
  • Examples are computed. The numbers in our worked examples come from the same code as the calculators, so a text cannot drift away from the tool.
  • Limits are written down. Each page says what the tool does not know, for example regional holidays or collective agreements.

If you find a mistake, please tell us. Corrections are welcome and we fix them quickly.

Why the tools are free

The tools are free to use. To cover the costs of running the site we may show advertising, but only with your consent where the law requires it, and never in a way that blocks a tool or hides a result. Your numbers stay in your browser: calculations run on your device.

Who is behind the site
