How to use it

  1. Pick the conversion. Use “hh:mm to decimal” to convert hours and minutes, “Decimal to hh:mm” for the other direction, and “Between two times” to find a duration.
  2. Type the values. Hours and minutes are two separate fields. For decimals, a comma or a dot both work.
  3. Copy the result. The answer appears as you type. Use “Copy result” to paste it into a timesheet or a spreadsheet.

How to convert hours and minutes to decimal hours

Minutes are sixtieths of an hour, decimals are tenths and hundredths, so the two do not line up. To convert, keep the hours and divide the minutes by 60. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75. 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5, not 7.30.

To go the other way, keep the whole hours and multiply the decimal part by 60. 8.33 hours is 8 hours and 0.33 × 60 = 19.8 minutes, which rounds to 20, so 500 minutes in total or 8:20.

The converter does all calculations in whole minutes and rounds the decimal hours to two places. Two decimals are accurate to within about 18 seconds, which is enough for payroll in most places. One decimal (6-minute steps) is used by some systems and can lose up to 3 minutes per entry.

Useful memory aids: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.5, 45 minutes is 0.75. A tenth of an hour is exactly 6 minutes, so payroll systems that use tenths round to 6-minute steps.

Finding the time between two clock times

Subtract the start from the end and then take off any unpaid break. From 09:00 to 17:30 is 510 minutes; minus a 30-minute break it is 8:00, or 8.00 decimal hours.

If the end is earlier than the start, the period crosses midnight: 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours, because 22:00 to 24:00 is 2 hours and 00:00 to 06:00 is 6. The converter treats an earlier end as the next day. Two identical times give zero, not 24 hours. With a 30-minute break the night shift is 7:30, or 7.50 hours.

To add up several days, use the hours worked and time card calculator, which keeps a row for each day and totals them. For overtime pay on the total, continue with the overtime calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert 7 hours 45 minutes to decimal?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 7.75 hours.
How do I convert minutes to a decimal fraction of an hour?
Divide by 60. 20 minutes is 0.33 hours, 40 minutes is 0.67 hours, 6 minutes is 0.1 hours.
Why is 7.30 hours not 7 hours 30 minutes?

How do I calculate the hours between two times?

How many decimals should payroll use?
Two decimals are accurate to about 18 seconds. Some systems use one decimal (6-minute steps) or three. Follow the one your payroll or contract specifies.
