How many days until...?

How to use it

1. Choose what to count to. Use «An occasion» to pick a holiday from the list, or «A date» to type any day: a trip, a due date, an exam, a wedding.
2. Read the countdown. The big number is the days left. Below it you get the exact date, the weeks and days, the working days in between and the day of the week.
3. Copy it or come back tomorrow. The copy button puts the result on your clipboard for a message or a note. Tomorrow the count drops by one on its own.

How the days are counted

A countdown is a subtraction: the date of the event minus today's date. Today does not count, the day of the event does. On December 24 there is 1 day until Christmas; on December 25 the tool tells you it is today, and from December 26 it points to next year's Christmas.

Today's date comes from your device, so the result follows your time zone: the number goes down by one at local midnight. The arithmetic works on whole calendar days, with no hours involved, so leap years and months of different lengths never throw it off.

Weeks are simply the days divided by 7: 72 days are 10 weeks and 2 days. Working days are the Mondays to Fridays from tomorrow up to the day before the date, with no public holidays removed. If you need holidays taken out, use the business days calculator.

The occasions and their rules

Many holidays fall on the same day every year: Christmas on December 25, New Year's Day on January 1, Halloween on October 31, Valentine's Day on February 14, the Fourth of July. Others move, and the tool works them out:

• Thanksgiving in the United States is the fourth Thursday in November, as set by the federal holidays law. It can fall anywhere from November 22 to November 28.
• Easter is the Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon of spring and lands between March 22 and April 25. You can see the next years in the Easter date calculator.
• Orthodox Easter follows the same idea on the Julian calendar, converted to Gregorian dates. Sometimes it matches Western Easter, often it is one or more weeks later.
• Start of summer here is meteorological summer, which begins on June 1. Astronomical summer starts at the June solstice, on June 20 or 21 depending on the year.

School terms and vacations differ by district and change every year, so they are not in the list. Choose «A date» and enter the day from your school calendar.
