Business days calculator

Count the working days between two dates, or find the date that is a number of business days away. Weekends and the public holidays of your country are skipped, and everything runs in your browser.

Federal holidays of the United States. A holiday on a weekend is taken on the nearest weekday.

How to use it

  1. Choose the calculation. Pick “Between two dates” to count working days in a period, or “Add or subtract” to find a date a number of business days away.
  2. Select the country. The public holidays of that country are skipped together with the weekend. Choose “No holidays” if only weekends should be skipped.
  3. Enter the dates. Type or pick the start date, and either the end date or the number of business days. The result appears immediately.
  4. Adjust if needed. Under “Weekend and extra days off” you can change the weekend (for example Friday and Saturday), include or exclude the start and end days, and add company closures.

How business days are counted

A business day, also called a working day, is a day that is neither part of the weekly rest nor a public holiday. In most countries the weekly rest is Saturday and Sunday, so a normal week has five business days. The calculator applies three rules, in this order.

  1. Weekend days are skipped. You can change which days of the week count as weekend, because some countries rest on Friday and Saturday and some businesses work six days.
  2. Public holidays of the chosen country are skipped when they fall on a day that would otherwise be a working day. A holiday that falls on a Saturday or Sunday takes nothing away, because that day was already a rest day. Two holidays on the same date count once.
  3. Your own days off (a company shutdown, a local saint's day, a day of leave) are skipped in the same way as public holidays.

When you count between two dates, both the first and the last day are counted by default if they are working days. This is how the spreadsheet function NETWORKDAYS works. You can switch either end off. When you add days, the starting day is not counted, which matches WORKDAY: one business day after a Friday is the following Monday.

Easter and the feasts that move with it (Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension, Whit Monday) are calculated for every year from a published algorithm, not read from a table. That is why the results stay correct for years far from today. See the Easter dates page for the method.

Which public holidays are included

The calculator knows the nationwide holidays of seven countries. Regional and local holidays differ too much from place to place to guess, so they are not included; add them under “Your own days off”.

CountryHolidays in 2026What is covered
Italy13National holidays, including Easter Monday and, from 2026, 4 October (St Francis). No local patron saints.
Romania16Legal days off, with Orthodox Easter, Good Friday and Pentecost. No bridge days.
United States11Federal holidays; a Saturday holiday is observed on Friday, a Sunday holiday on Monday.
United Kingdom8England and Wales bank holidays with substitute days and one-off royal holidays.
Germany9Holidays valid in every state. State holidays are not included.
France11The 11 national public holidays.
Spain10National holidays. Regional and local holidays, and Monday transfers of Sunday holidays, are not included.

In 2026 a plain Monday-to-Friday calendar has 261 weekdays. After public holidays that falls to 254 in Italy and Germany, 253 in the United Kingdom, 252 in France and 250 in the United States and in Romania.

Worked examples

A simple month

From Monday, March 2, 2026 to Friday, March 27, 2026 there are 26 calendar days. Subtracting 6 weekend days leaves 20 business days, exactly four working weeks.

The same month in three countries

April 2026 has 22 weekdays. In Italy Easter Monday (6 April) takes one away, so 21 business days. In Romania Orthodox Good Friday (10 April) and Easter Monday (13 April) take two, so 20. In the United States no federal holiday falls in April, so 22. Notice that Italian 25 April is a Saturday in 2026, so it removes nothing.

Adding days across two holidays

Ten US business days after Thursday, December 17, 2026: Christmas Day on Friday 25 December and New Year's Day on Friday 1 January are skipped, together with 6 weekend days. The result is Monday, January 4, 2027, 18 calendar days later.

A holiday on a Saturday

Independence Day, 4 July 2026, is a Saturday, so US federal employees take Friday 3 July instead. July 2026 has 23 weekdays; with the substitute day the calculator counts 22 business days. If you turn off “Substitute days for weekend holidays”, it counts 23.

A Friday and Saturday weekend

With rest on Friday and Saturday, the working week runs Sunday to Thursday. From Sunday, March 1, 2026 to Thursday, March 12, 2026 there are 10 business days.

A leap day

Two business days after Wednesday, February 28, 2024 is Friday, March 1, 2024: Thursday 29 February counts as the first, Friday 1 March as the second.

Using business days for deadlines and delivery

Business days appear in contracts, delivery estimates, payment terms, notice periods and legal time limits. “Delivery in 5 business days” usually means five days that are not weekend or holiday, counted from the day after the order. A payment term of 30 business days is about six weeks, not 30 calendar days.

  • Check how your document defines the day. Some contracts count Saturday as a business day, some count from the day of the order, some exclude the day of an event. Switch the options in “Weekend and extra days off” to match.
  • Cut-off times matter. An order placed after the daily cut-off is often treated as placed on the next business day. Enter the first counted day, not the clock time.
  • Time zones can move the date. The calculator works with calendar dates, so the answer is the same wherever you are. If two parties are in different countries, agree whose calendar and holidays apply.

What the calculator does not know

  • Regional and local holidays (US state holidays, German state holidays, Spanish autonomous communities, Scotland and Northern Ireland).
  • Bridge days that a government decides on year by year, and half days such as Christmas Eve in some sectors.
  • Unannounced closures: national days of mourning, strikes, severe weather.
  • Rules for the years before the ones listed in the warning shown when you pick an earlier date.

The result is a calculation aid. For a legal deadline, a payroll date or a contract, confirm the date with the official source for your jurisdiction.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between business days and working days?
In everyday use they mean the same: days that are not weekend or public holidays. Some contracts add differences, for example counting Saturday as a working day for a shop, so always check the definition in your document.
Does the start date count?
When you count between two dates, yes by default: both ends are counted if they are working days, like NETWORKDAYS in Excel. You can switch either end off. When you add business days, the start day is not counted, like WORKDAY in Excel, unless you turn on “Count the start date”.
How do I count business days in Excel or Google Sheets?
Use =NETWORKDAYS(start, end, holidays) to count and =WORKDAY(start, days, holidays) to add. Both skip Saturday and Sunday. For a different weekend use NETWORKDAYS.INTL and WORKDAY.INTL. This page does the same and also knows the holidays of seven countries.
Is Saturday a business day?
Not by default. In the calculator the weekend is Saturday and Sunday, but you can change it. Choose “Friday and Saturday” for much of the Middle East, “Sunday only” for a six-day week, or tick the days you need.
Are the Easter holidays correct for any year?
Yes. Western and Orthodox Easter are calculated with the standard computus algorithms and checked against known dates for every year from 2000 to 2100, and the moving holidays are derived from them. For Romania the Orthodox Easter is used.
How many business days are there in a year?
A year with no holidays has 261 weekdays in 2026. After public holidays, the count in 2026 is 250 in the United States, 253 in the United Kingdom, 252 in France, 254 in Italy and 250 in Romania. Pick the country and the first and last day of the year to see your own figure.
Are my dates sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Your dates, closing days and options are remembered only in this browser, so you can pick up where you left off. Use “Clear saved data” under the calculator to start again.
